Where I Stand
Crime. People who commit crimes that harm others
should face the consequences for their actions.
I have no problem standing in court and requesting
that criminals be sent to prison. In the appropriate case, I will
not have a problem asking a jury to sentence a murderer to
death.

If you commit a crime in Storey County and I can prove that you
did, I will prosecute you.

Drugs. Drug Court has worked in helping people get off drugs
and deal with their drug problems. Drug Court has proved to be
a good tool for users who honestly want to kick the drug habit.

However, people who prey on others to support their drug habits
or who sell drugs to others will be prosecuted.

Victims of Crime. People who are victims of crime deserve to
know what is happening with their cases.

If you are unfortunate enough to become the victim of a crime, I
will keep you informed about all court dates, the disposition of
the case, and help you recover your property or restitution for
your losses.

Juveniles. Let's face it, teenagers want to press the limits that
their parents and society place on them. This means that some
juveniles also break the law. I believe that juveniles who break
the law should face the consequences for their actions. The
juvenile justice system usually does a good job doing this and
helping these kids.

However, a wise person once said that a good prosecutor has to
be able to tell the difference between "young people who commit
crime" and "young criminals." For most juvenile offenders, I will
work to make sure that they get whatever help they need as part
of their juvenile probation. However, I will not hesitate to seek
adult certification for "young criminals"--particularly if they
commit crimes of violence.

Plea Bargaining. Plea bargaining has its place. The reality is that
over 90% of all criminal cases do not go to trial. However, plea
bargaining has earned a bad reputation when prosecutors forget
that plea bargaining is a tool and not an ends to a mean. When I
negotiate a case, I will remember that often there is a real victim
who has a real interest in the outcome of a case. Plea bargaining
will never be used as a means of resolving a case merely for the
sake of expediency.

Relations With Law Enforcement. My promise is simple: If I am
considering declining a case for prosecution, I will sit down with
the arresting officer and tell him or her why I am leaning in that
direction. I will also give that officer an opportunity to persuade
me that I am wrong. Communications has to be a two-way street.

Relations With County Officers. As District Attorney, I will
strive to have a good working relationship with the County
Manager, the County Commission, and the other elected officials.
As the county's attorney, I will make sure that they all receive
the best possible legal advice for any legal issues facing Storey
County.

Fiscal Responsibility. In an era of tight budgets, all county
officials have an obligation to be as fiscally responsible as
possible. Just because money has been budgeted doesn't mean
it has to be spent. I will not spend your tax dollars unnecessarily.

I will handle as much legal work as possible “in house.”
Additionally, in the rare circumstances when outside legal
counsel performs legal work, I will insist on being fully aware of
what is happening  so that I can intelligently advise the County
Commission.

The River District. The people who live in Lockwood and other
portions of the River District, or who work in the Tahoe Reno
Industrial Center, deserve a county presence. I understand that
at times face-to-face communication is necessary, and that
telephone calls and e-mail do not always work. For that reason,
I will regularly have office hours in the River District. You won't
even need an appointment to see me.

Virginia City and the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center. Storey
County is blessed with two separate crown jewels: Virginia City
along with the rest of the Comstock Historic District and the
Tahoe Reno Industrial Center.

Storey County needs to nurture both and do what it can to
promote both. As District Attorney I will help do that.
